Rufus Wright was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and studied art at the National Academy of Design. He was active in California and the American West in the mid-19th century. He is best known as a portraitist of 19th-century political figures. He died in 1900, probably in Brooklyn, New York. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1862-1880; the Brooklyn Art Association from 1865-1880; and others.
