Larry McMurtry. MOVING ON. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1970. Advance uncorrected proofs. Yellow wrappers printed in black on front cover, cream card stock spine, all glued as issued. 530pp. This copy was sent to Joan Didion in March 1970 from Michael Korda, Editor-in-Chief at Simon and Schuster. Included with the proofs is a TLS on company letterhead sent to Didion's Hollywood home on Franklin Avenue, dated March 4th, and signed by Korda in blue ink. Korda tells Didion about the upcoming publication of McMurtry's book, "one of the most powerful and readable novels to come out of America in many years," and writes, "I do hope you will read MOVING ON. I think you will enjoy it. And I don't have to tell you how pleased we would be to hear from you about it."

12 x 5 in.

Larry McMurtry (d. 2021) was a screenwriter and novelist, known for works such as Terms of Endearment and Lonesome Dove. Many of his novels were made into movies, or adapted for television. He earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaall.

Joan Didion (d. 2021) was a celebrated writer and journalist who began her career in the late 1950s. She wrote novels, essays, and numerous non-fiction titles. Her powerful memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, won a National Book Award in 2005. Coincidentally, writer and editor Michael Korda eventually became Didion's own editor after the death of Henry Robbins.

Light spotting, toning, and edge wear to wraps, with light creasing at the spine and areas of glue residue from binding; light toning at page edges with a clean interior; very good. The letter is near fine with minor age wear, and a faint stain and tiny spots of residue on verso. A fascinating and unique association copy bringing together some of America's best known modern writers.
