From the Collection of Duke Hospital, Sold to Benefit Duke Arts and Health Anthony Poon Kin Soon was a pioneering Singaporean abstract artist. Poon studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the Bynum Shaw School of Art in London. After graduation, He returned to Singapore in 1971 and formed a relationship with the Alpha Gallery, where he held regular exhibitions and later became the gallery manager.
Poon's works convey an interest in symmetry and the illusion of three-dimensionality. His style of abstraction was more controlled and mathematical than many of his contemporaries. As his career in the arts progressed, his works slowly evolved from two-dimensional into three-dimensional forms. His final work was a sculpture for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, which he completed shortly before his death.
Poon was a member of the Singapore National Arts Council. In 1990, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Art, Singapore’s highest award for those achieving artistic excellence.
Grime, scuffing, and a few dents to the canvas, scattered abrasions to the frame.
