Susanna Haswell Rowson (1762-1824) was a writer, actress, editor of Boston Weekly magazine, and later a proprietor of a successful academy for young ladies in Boston, Massachusetts from 1797-1822. There, mastering embroidery was an essential requirement of a good education for girls of the time.
