A native of Wisconsin, Homer Ellertson studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He was awarded a scholarship to travel abroad in 1914, took instruction in Paris, traveled in Spain, and returned to New York during the outbreak of World War I. Ellertson completed his studies at Pratt and found success at a Manhattan commercial establishment where he designed rugs, wallpapers, and textiles.

Ellertson visited Tryon, North Carolina, around 1920 and settled there. In 1923, he designed and built El Taarn, a mansion that functioned as a home and studio. He joined the artists' colony in the mountains of Tryon North Carolina, where he spent the rest of his life until his death at the age of 42.

Ellertson exhibited widely during his lifetime. He was a member of the American Federation of Arts, and the Southern States Art League. A multi-media exhibition titled Homer Ellertson: Retrospective of a Versatile Artist was exhibited at Tryon Fine Arts Center, in 2000.
