Hattie Saussy was born in Savannah, Georgia, and studied art from a young age. She frequented the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences in Savannah and was particularly influenced by its fine collection of French and American impressionist works. After graduating from the Pape School, Saussy spent a year at Mary Baldwin Seminary in Staunton, Virginia. While enrolled there she exhibited paintings at the Jamestown Tricentary Exposition in 1907.

She spent several years in New York, attending the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club for Women. She spent several years abroad before and after the First World War. Eventually, Saussy settled in Savannah as a full-time artist, traveling extensively in the Carolinas, Georgia, and the American South.

Saussy was active in the Savannah Art Club and the Georgia Association of Artists. She exhibited at several Georgia venues including the Telfair Academy in Savannah, the Columbus Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Augusta-Richmond County Museum, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. A retrospective of her work was held in 1982 in Savannah under the sponsorship of the Historic Savannah Foundation. (Adapted from the Charleston Renaissance Gallery)
