Oil on canvas, signed with monogram at lower right, the canvas with artist stamp from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to verso, framed.

Stretcher size 30 1/2 x 25 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 33 x 28 in.

Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Henry Bainbridge McCarter studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, graduating in 1883. McCarter spent time in Paris, where he studied with Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Leon Bonnat, Alexander Harrison, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and others.

He was a member and instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1902-1942. McCarter exhibited there annually and was often awarded for his work. In addition, he exhibited at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, St. Louis Exposition, Corcoran Gallery, Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Art Institute of Chicago, and others. His paintings can be found in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy.

Surface grime; canvas is quite thin and there is a very minor split to the support in the upper register of the work. Overall pleasing variance of texture to the surface between raised impasto and thin washes of color.
