Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1805, watercolor on ivory, unsigned, the blue eyed sitter attired in dark frock coat, striped waistcoat, and tied cravat, presented behind glass in a fancy gilt brooch to the reverse. The reverse with ink inscribed note identifying the sitter "_Lavallein Puxley Esqre / Uncle of Henry Laval../

Miniature 2 3/4 x 2 1/8 in.; Brooch 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 in.

From a Private Collection, Washington, D.C.

Some genealogical research of the notes on the back points to a John Paul Lavallin Puxley "Copper John" (1772-1856), who was born in Cork, Ireland in 1772, and passed on November 8th, 1856 in Dyfed, Pembrokeshire, UK. Other likenesses of the Copper John exist, and are consistent with the likeness of sitter in this portrait.

Good estate condition; the case aperture on the reverse is vacant; some light scratches to the case.
